Top 5 Dresses for the Office Holiday Party

It’s that time of year again! You wake up to frost on your car windows and every where you go you see the holiday versions of your favourite products. It’s also the time for the Office Holiday Party and you’re probably busy gathering info from your co-workers on what they’re planning to wear and who they’re going with. Today, we’ve included tips on preparing for the party and our picks of the Top 5 dresses for the Office Holiday Party.

Do  keep it elegant and festive

Don’t go overboard with the holiday themed pins and paraphenilia. Just one festive pin or cute winter hat is enough to pull off a great holiday ensemble. Avoid wearing green and red together. Even if its the holidays, you don’t need to end up looking like Santa’s Little Helper :)

Do pay attention to the details on the invite. Note the time, venue and activities to determine the appropriate attire. If the event is during the workday, then wear something a little more fancier than what you’d usually wear to the office. You can pair a silk, cashmere or velvet top with a nice pair of trousers and add on pretty accessories like sparkly earrings or a drop necklace.

Don’t wear anything too sexy or revealing. Remember, these are still your co-workers and superiors. You have a professional reputation to uphold and you still want them to see you in the same way the next day. Furthermore, if you’re in a corporate environment, your superiors may be judging how you handle yourself in social situations since meeting important clients may be an integral part of your job. Avoid hemlines that go any higher than 3 inches above the knees, backless items, deep plunging necklines, ostentatious fur, out of control sparkles or outrageous getups.

Do ask co-workers what they are planning to wear and how they will get to the venue. Perhaps they have gone to similar events in the past and can fill you in on what to expect in respect to how the event will unfold. In some companies, office holiday parties can turn out to be an informal staff meeting with snacks and awards. In other companies, it may be a black tie gala where you should look and be at your best in order to get noticed for the job promotion. You just don’t want to show up having prepared for something else entirely.

Don’t assume you can bring your friends or family. Make sure your invite specifically say that it is okay to bring others along and do note how many.

Do thank your host for a lovely evening. You know its common courtesy to do this in social situations of a personal nature but this is surprisingly overlooked when its a party held by your company. It’s always nice to recognize the amount of time, effort and money spent on arranging the party. Doing this will really make you stand out in the crowd. You should seek out the relevant parties and thank them in person before you leave. These people include the person footing the bill and the person who organized the event. Make sure whomever you invited along also comes with you to say a simple thank you too.

1. You can never go wrong with a Little Black Dress. The hemline of this dress is of an appropriate length. The shape is understated but it has a sparkly neckline that adds a nice touch for formal events. If your event is a sit down dinner, you can pair this dress with a bolero cardigan to avoid exposing too much skin.

2. Red is always a great color choice for the holiday season. If you’re planning on wearing red, match it with neutrals like black, silver and white. Although, you might think its very festive, avoid pairing it with green.

3. If red is too intense for you, purple is a nice alternative. From Eggplant, violet to lavender, there are just so many shades to choose from. Eggplant purple errs on the safe side since it’s a nice dark colour that almost looks black in low lighting. Below we’ve chosen a light purple evening dress cut from a fancy satin fabric adorned with pretty gem stones. The simple shape follows the contours of the body but isn’t too tight or inappropriate. Its a feminine look that matches surprisingly well with a daytime blazer. When you button up the double breasted blazer, you can even wear this dress at the office before the party.

4. This structured taffetta number is cut from a sophisticated Navy Blue and has spaghetti straps that ensure your dress stays up as you dance and move about. Navy Blue really POPS when paired with white. It will really enhance and bring out the best in this elegant colour. Avoid pairing it with black as it will darken up your outfit and does nothing to highlight the colour. The scallop design in the bust area is excellent for adding volume to the chest for those who are not well endowed.

5. This last pick is a conservative Little Black Dress that has a lot of coverage and can be worn again in the daytime at the office. If you choose to wear something simple like this, make sure you add some sparkle to your look by adding pretty accessories.

We hope this article was helpful to you. Have fun at your event and send us your comments, suggestions or funny holiday party stories ;)

9 New Ways to Wear Your Scarf

How do you usually wear your scarves? Some might answer with “What do you mean? All you need to do is just wrap it around your neck…” Well, there are actually a variety of ways to create  different looks with your scarves which we will show you today. The wonderful thing about scarves is that its a nice soft accessory that can be worn in all seasons and for almost all occasions. You can add a funky printed linen scarf to add more color and dimension to a plain top. Or you can tie a soft wool scarf around your neck or tuck it in inside your coat for warmth. You can also wear a light silky scarf with your dress for a sophisticated look at the office. There’s just so much you can do with it. We’ll share a few easy and practical styles that you can pull off too:

Single Loop

Single loop is a basic style and is suitable for use with any type of scarf. Hang the scarf loosely around your neck for adding layer, volume, and style.

  1. Wrap the scarf around your neck from the front to the back.
  2. Cross the scarf behind your neck.
  3. Pull both ends of scarf to the front of your chest.
  4. Adjust the tightness of your scarf.

European Loop

The European loop is as easy as the single loop but is more secure. Because the scarf is tightly wrapped around your neck, its a good choice for chilly days.

  1. Fold the scarf in half.
  2. Wrap the folded scarf around your neck.
  3. Pull the ends of the scarf inside the fold.
  4. Adjust the tightness for your comfort.

Ascot Knot

The Ascot knot is a sophisticated look that adds volume at the center front. It is an ideal choice in the winter season for adding coverage to shirts and coats.

  1. Hang the scarf around your neck equally at both sides.
  2. Bring one end to another to make a knot.
  3. Make the top end cover the bottom.
  4. Adjust both ends equally.

Braided Loop

The Braided loop is slightly more complicated but adds a touch of fashion while keeping you warm.

  1. Make a single loop first. For better clarification, we will call both hanging ends of scarf A and B.
  2. Pull the loop further to one side of your shoulder closer to the A end of the scarf.
  3. Take the B end of the scarf.
  4. Insert the B end of the scarf into the loop.
  5. Pass behind the A end of the scarf.
  6. Pull the B end of the scarf out from the loop.
  7. Adjust the tightness for style and comfort.

Western Neck Wrap

The Western neck wrap best shows off the exquisite designs of funky prints and tassels on the ends of your scarves.

  1. Fold the rectangular scarf in half.
  2. Fold one corner of the scarf to the middle of the opposite side to resemble a triangle.
  3. Pull both ends of the triangle to the back of your neck and tie a knot.
  4. Adjust the hanging point at the front of your body to achieve the desired look

Circular wrap

The Circular wrap looks clean and stylish by folding away the remaining parts of the scarf that is usually left hanging over the front of your body.

  1. Make a single loop first.
  2. Keep twisting and turning the loop around your neck until the dangling ends are rolled away within the loop.
  3. Adjust the tightness to your comfort.

Bow

Light weighted scarves such as silk or chiffon are more feminine. It accentuates your beautiful neckline with a neatly tied bow.

  1. Position your scarf around your neck.
  2. Tie a simple knot.
  3. Tie a regular bow.
  4. Adjust the size of the bow and the length of the hanging ends downwards to complement your outfit.

*Sophisticated Bow

  1. Position your scarf around your neck.
  2. Tie a simple knot leaving one end longer than the other.
  3. Fold the longer end to the desired width for your bow.
  4. Wrap the shorter end of the scarf around the center of the folded longer end to make a knot to secure the bow.
  5. Tuck away the rest of shorter end of scarf and adjust the size of your bow.

Shrug

You can transform your wider scarves into a cape, shawl, or shrug. Simply put your scarves around your body and adjust for styles.

  1. Position your scarf around your shoulder.
  2. Leave both ends of scarf hanging down from your arms.
  3. Pull both ends of scarf around your waist to your back.
  4. Tie a simple or double knot behind your back.
  5. Adjust your newly formed shrug.

Make your own colors

Scarves are timeless fashion pieces that can be worn in all seasons and with a variety of different styles.  Although there are many incredible designs out there, you can create your own look by mixing two scarves together. Depending on the fabric, simply wear 2 scarves of similar fabric weight together to create a unique look thats all your own.

What to wear with sleeveless items?

Are you concerned that you can’t pull of that sleeveless item because you don’t like showing off your arms? Are you always on the look out for long sleeved dresses and tops because you want to cover your arms? Well, we say don’t worry so much about finding that elusive long sleeved item, you can definitely wear that cute spaghetti strap dress or top! Below, we will show you various outer wear  options that help to provide warmth and coverage with a lot of style too!

Boleros

What is a bolero? A bolero is a short body, cropped cardigan that covers a small portion of the upper body. It can have a closure with a few buttons at the front or a tie underneath the bust line or it is cut off at the sides simulating the look of two sleeves joined at the back.

Whether the party you are attending is held indoors or outdoors, you will most likely need something warm to wear. This is especially true for parties that start on a hot summer day and end in the late evening as the night wind starts to kick in. Most dresses are not designed to keep you warm and usually do not come with sleeves for style purposes. You can choose a bolero cardigan to pair with your dress for a complete but uncluttered look. It will help cover up your arms if you are uncomfortable exposing too much of your skin.

Boleros are not only intended for formal wear. A bolero can be cut from many different types of fabric, including silk, satin, cotton, and polyester, etc. Layer a bolero with your favorite strapless summer dress to dress up your outfit while keeping you cool in the warmer weather. A denim version like the one below matches effortlessly with any summer floral.

Cardigans

A cardigan is a versatile and stylish choice for casual or formal settings and in any season. Open front cardigans cut from sheer fabrics are comfortable and breezy for the summer and the fabric’s light weight makes it a great layering piece. It’s super convenient to carry a light cardigan in your handbag without it taking too much space.

Try wearing a cardigan over your sleeveless dress shirt and tanks for coverage and add dimension into your outfit. A light weight cardigan does not add bulkiness to your shoulders and arms but rather brings out a slimmer look by covering undesired areas.

Try wearing a cardigan over your tight-fitted tube dresses to keep yourself warm at the party or the restaurant.

Blazers

Blazers have taken up a new meaning in fashion in recent years. You can pair them with almost any type of outfit. Wear a boyfriend blazer with a chic pencil skirt for the office and then pair it with a funky shirt and jeans for a more edgy rock and roll look for a day out with friends. Blazers add definitions to your silhouette and is especially ideal for camouflaging broad shoulders and heavier arms.

Blazers can be worn with dresses as well to balance out a feminine look. Wear a blazer over your cocktail dress before the party and save yourself the trouble of bringing an extra outfit to change into.

Cropped Jackets

A cropped jacket has a hemline that ends at the waist or higher. Cropped jackets can help reduce fabric bulk at the waist and helps to accentuate your curves while disguising thicker arms.

Try wearing a cropped jacket with simple sleeveless items for a comfortable yet stylish look. Choose a cropped jacket with exquisite fabrics to dress up your casual outfits.

Hope you enjoyed some of our suggestions and gives you the confidence to wear that cute spaghetti strap dress or top.
