Why You Should Stay Away from those Small Sizes

Did you know that wearing the incorrect size can actually make you look bigger? Buying the wrong size is a very common fitting mistake. With every company having their own labelling systems, we don’t blame you. Sometimes you can walk into one store and fit into an XS while you can walk into the next and fit into a Medium! Don’t worry, you didn’t increase 2 sizes in the span of one shopping trip. We highly recommend that you don’t focus so much on what the label says and just buy the size that you can see is the most visually appealing for YOUR body. Here are some tips:

1. If you have never tried any items before from the particular company, ask their associates how their items fit. Does it fit true to size or smaller/bigger? Then go about finding the correct size.
2. Always look at the fit ALL across the body, the item should not fit smoothly only in one place and way too snug in another. When this happens, buy to fit the larger area and make adjustments accordingly. (See below for strapless items)
3. Don’t be afraid to spend money on tailoring. You will look amazing when you are wearing something that fits to your own body. Even inexpensive items can make good use of tailoring. When it has a tailored look to fit YOUR body, it can look EVEN better than that expensive item 3 or 4 times that price. So the money you spend on a little bit of tailoring may very well pay off.
4. Use “little helpers” like Lingerie Tape or Silicone Bra to give you that extra secure fit. (See below)

What Should I Look for when I Try on an Item?

In the pictures labelled INCORRECT FIT you can see several areas in which the item is not fitting properly. You should pay attention to these areas the next time you go clothes shopping:
  1. Zipper should be lying smoothly along the back. In the picture with the incorrect fit, you can see that the zipper is actually making a “wave” along the back because the fabric is being stretched both horizontally and vertically so it doesn’t allow the zipper to lay properly.
  2. The fabric should sit nicely on both sides of your hips giving you a nice hourglass figure. In the incorrect fit picture, you can literally see that the shape of the hips and waist is not smooth and looks “lumpy” because the item is just too tight. Because of the pulling of the fabric, the body actually ends up looking like it’s “spilling out” of the item and appears bigger than it really is.

This Strapless Style is Slipping Off, Should I Buy the Smaller Size?

One of the most common mistakes when buying a strapless item is to choose a smaller size just because you feel it’s slipping off. Of course, you should buy an item that hugs your body nicely and accentuates your natural curves but you should also pay special attention as to whether the item is fitting too tightly in some areas.

Your first instincts may be to choose a strapless item that fits snug around the bust area while ignoring the fit in the waist and hips. Most strapless items will never give you a super secure feeling because it just doesn’t have straps. If you buy it so tight that you can’t even breathe or move, the item will not flatter your body as it will most likely be “pulling” too much as seen in the photos above.

You should buy a size that fits your hips and waist. Also, make sure it’s not “pulling” too hard and the fabric is smooth around those areas. Then, make adjustments to your bust area accordingly with either a Padded Strapless Bra, BRA TAPE or the SILICONE BRA.

Lingerie tape will give you a secure fit quickly and discreetly. Apply some to the top of your bustline to keep your item in place. $12.50

The Silicone Bra is perfect for backless dresses and tube tops that need an extra “boost” in the bust area. It will help give you extra volume in the bust area to “fill out” that strapless item that seem to keep slipping off. Silicone technology allows the surface to adhere onto body surfaces without glue or straps. Just apply it onto a clean body surface and mould into shape.

It’s easy to take care of and can be worn many many times. Wash it gently with warm water to help maintain its sticky adhesive surface.
